  1. Tell us your journey. What were some obstacles you faced along the way? What inspired Happiness Factors?

When I came here to be with my ex, I had big dreams, starry eyes and lots of excitement! After all, I had been able to get married to the guy I loved, against all odds. I had no clue that the love story would soon turn into a nightmare. Being naive and young, I kept on trying to mold myself into someone he wouldn’t lash out at, wouldn’t abuse. I was trying to do everything in my power to avoid the pain he inflicted. I stopped doing things I loved such as writing poetry, being on stage, even making friends as all these and anything else I wanted, made him angry. I withdrew from people and even stopped smiling. Didn’t realize that I had started walking with head down till someone commented.

Without being aware, I lost all confidence and didn’t feel good enough to live. This country was new to me and I didn’t have anyone, how would I survive. Due to divine intervention, good fortune or my parents watching from heaven, I was referred to a therapist without asking for it. She started trying to convince me to leave while I still could, in one piece. I still resisted and it took her several months till I got the courage. During this time, she tried to put me on anti-depressants. Not wanting the side effects, I instead decided to start each day with a workout. I had no job or support system when I left. I slept on bare floor till I had the money to buy furniture. One of my friends got me some utensils from her home till I could afford to buy.  He knew how naïve I was and emotionally manipulated me into not hiring an attorney and giving him the signing authority. Little did I know that he was doing this to cheat me of savings. I included self-development as a part of my life, and it helped me peel layers and layers of trauma and hurt. It took several years to heal. Took more time for me to forgive myself for getting so used in the guise of love and build self confidence back. I used to win awards before he came into my life and have won several awards after I left him.

After years of coaching, therapy and holistic healing and creating an unstoppable, confident Anita, I realized the effectiveness of combining the holistic best of the East and West and created HappinessFactors. I also realized that being the smart woman I am, he was only able to manipulate so much because I wasn’t mentally well and had lost all confidence. Since leaving him and healing, I have been able to win several awards including Woman of Influence, Community Hero, Outstanding Coach and more. Most notable was getting featured on Times Square for my mental wellness startup, HappinessFactors. Currently looking for B2B early adopters. HappinessFactors App is available on IOS and Play store for download.

 2. You have a blog post on your site, 4 Emotional Types that Define You. Each type is a different season. Tell us more about your philosophy here.

Just as there are predominantly 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, Human emotions can be categorized under 4 types. The people who live in the Spring emotional type are able to find happiness, joy and other positive emotions regularly, no matter what life brings.  Whether life brings joy or learning, they are grateful and are able to over negativity quickly and get on with their lives. Can’t say it better than Lilly Pulitzer, “Despite the forecast, live like its spring.”

There are some who always find a way to learn, grow and shine.

They have a warmth of character are outgoing and brighten up the room. They are charismatic and people want to be around them. These are the summer types.  They bring sunshine with them.

There are some people who have the ability to find a problem for every solution. There life seems to be full of struggles and difficulties. They are the emotionally autumn types.

There are some folks get stressed at the slightest incident. They are full of worry, fear and anxiety. They are cold and find it difficult to open up or make friends. These are the winter types. They rarely laugh and are usually quite serious and lonesome.

Being in the business of mental wellness, I get to talk to a variety of people with different emotional types. Whether for coaching, courses, workshops, seminars or training, its always interesting to perceive how different emotional types react differently to the same situation, incident or stimuli. We all have varying levels of the 4 emotional types in our systems. The happiest ones are those who predominantly operate from Spring and Summer.

3. What are your 5 tips to Finding Happiness.

Happiness is an inside job and has roots inside. In order to sustain it long-term, we need to work on our internal selves to remove the blocks and limiting behavior patterns that keep us from being happy. Life happens to all of us and we get to decide whether to take the learning and grow or feel like a victim and give up.

Getting the right tools to get centered and focus on what really matters long term, make a world of difference!

The 5 I live by in everyday routine are :

  1. Positive Intention: It’s a great idea to set an intention for the day immediately after waking up. Put both palms together, look at them while setting the intention of how your day is going to unfold. I usually set the intention that today is going to be an amazing day.

  2. Yoga & Meditation: Done properly, yoga not just helps you get a workout and stretching in, It also helps with focus and relaxation. Most folks are aware of the amazing benefits meditation brings to their lives. It not just helps get more oxygen in and boost immunity, but also helps one feel happier.

  3. Morning Shower & Energy Cleaning: Its common habit of people in the West to take shower in the evening.

That might adversely impact your mood during the day. Morning showers not just help one feel clean and fresh for the day, but also help feel lighter. One simple trick is to imagine the water washing away the negativity and replacing it with positivity and happiness.

  1. Healthy, Fresh Breakfast: In some yogic traditions, breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. Including a fresh, healthy, homemade, plant-based breakfast provides more energy, nutrition and sets up a happy tone for the day while making one feel more alert, focused and positive.

  2. Gratitude & Prayers: Gratitude helps get rid of scarcity mindset and develop an abundance mindset. Life appears better and more positive when we find things to be grateful for. It adds to our happiness quotient. So do prayers. When you believe in God or the higher power, you have faith. When you have faith, you know there’s force that has your back and you are protected with divine guidance. That leads to happiness
