Sangeeta Kumar Captures the Beauty of Boston

How and when did you discover your passion for photography? Did you have any formal training in photography?

Every artist has a unique story and journey. I have always been interested in art and fashion but never pursued that as my chosen career. My work life for 20+ years was working in the software development field. After my mother’s death in 2014, I went through a period of questioning my choices in life and decided to leave my job. During a period of self discovery, my husband, Riju Kumar introduced me to photography and to the Boston Instagram photography groups. I quickly discovered that I really enjoyed photography, meeting new people and being outdoors. It is a perfect outlet for my creativity and photography has become a passion. I am a self taught person learning initially from Riju, friends and then from YouTube videos.

What are some aspects of photography that you enjoy and what is your favorite kind of photography?

I grew up in Jaipur, India. Growing up in Jaipur, I have always been fascinated by colors, fashions, history, people and scenery. I wanted a hobby that would put me in a position to be out engaging with the world. Photograph allows me to capture moments in time and put my creative stamp on them. I observe familiar surroundings with a new perspective and notice things that I overlooked before. Shooting and editing photographs relaxes my mind and soul. I shoot because I see. Photography speaks to me and I paint the world with my photographs. I love making art via editing and combining elements of color and composition. Now travel has taken a whole new meaning. I love street and night photography. I don’t have any particular genre or style but photograph anything that speaks to me. A picture is a very powerful medium of communication and even people who can’t read can view and understand a picture. We have seen social media being used as a catalyst for change. I don’t take photographs to make an impact or to help people. This is my medium of recording the world around me and sharing it with other people. In the process if it helps people or inspires and moves others than I am honored. During the Covid19 social distancing period I am concentrating more on landscape and street photography and limiting portrait photography.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?

I post frequently on my social media accounts. I have two Instagram pages: @sangeeta.pix and @sangeeta.people I also have 2 Facebook pages Sangeeta Kumar & Sangeeta Kumar Photography The people account contains pictures of people from around the world and the pix account shows the world through my eyes. I travel quite a lot with my husband @riju.pics and my photographs are from all around the globe. My photographs have been displayed on NBC10Boston, NECN TV, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, South Asian Art Gallery and on street banners around the Boston Public Garden.
